Lumbar Spine Surgery

Lumbar Spine Surgery is performed to treat conditions affecting the lower back (lumbar region) that cause persistent pain, nerve compression, or spinal instability. It is usually recommended when conservative treatments such as medications, physiotherapy, and injections fail to provide relief. The main goal of lumbar spine surgery is to relieve pressure on spinal nerves, stabilize the spine if required, and restore mobility and quality of life. Modern surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and endoscopic approaches, allow safer procedures with reduced pain and faster recovery.

When is Lumbar Spine Surgery Needed?

Lumbar spine surgery may be advised in the following situations:

  • Severe lower back pain not improving with non-surgical treatment
  • Leg pain (sciatica) due to nerve compression
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs
  • Difficulty in walking or standing for long periods
  • Spinal instability or deformity
Common Lumbar Spine Procedures
  • Lumbar Discectomy: Removal of the herniated (slipped) disc pressing on the nerve.
  • Lumbar Decompression (Laminectomy): Removal of part of the bone or ligament to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves.
  • Lumbar Fusion: Stabilization of two or more vertebrae using screws and rods.
  • Endoscopic Lumbar Surgery: Minimally invasive technique using a small camera and tiny incision.
Recovery & Outcomes

Recovery after lumbar spine surgery depends on the type of procedure performed. Many minimally invasive surgeries allow early mobilization within 24 hours and shorter hospital stays. With proper rehabilitation and physiotherapy, most patients experience significant pain relief, improved mobility, and better overall function.
